What is CBR and Plate Testing?

California Bearing Ratio (CBR) testing and plate testing are types of load-bearing tests. These test the soils at or just underneath the surface. Load-bearing tests work out how much weight the ground can take. From here, we can determine the safe bearing capacity of an area.

Plate load tests (used for piling mats and crane mats) use a reactive load such as an excavator.

We can also carry out testing using handheld equipment which gives a strength (CBR) profile through the soils to 1m depth so that you can design the formation level of any roads or pavements on your site.

When would I Need a CBR Test?

CBR testing is most commonly used to inform the design of highways and housing estate roads. As it determines the strength of the subgrade soil, it allows for the appropriate selection of suitable pavement thickness for the anticipated traffic density together with any precautions for frost heave. If you’re not sure whether you need a CBR test, our team of experts is happy to offer advice and recommendations.
