Investigation and Remedial Strategy, Poplar

Redevelopment and refurbishment of the Brownfield Estate will completely transform the area from new homes, services, improved facilitates and better green spaces.  In total £5m is being spent on redesign and improvement to all green and outside places, with new communal areas and opportunities for play to be created, as well as giving a much needed face-lift to all outside areas in Brownfield.

YourEnvironment were commissioned to review an existing site investigation report and undertake an intrusive investigation in order to confirm ground conditions and ascertain the possible presence of soil contamination in order to address planning conditions.

Remediation of Petrol Filling Station - Hackney

YourEnvironment were called in by an existing client to manage the remediation of a former petrol filling station.

We undertook the entire project from cradle to grave – from Phase 1:  Desktop Study right through Intrusive Investigation, Remediation and Validation.  We also negotiated with the local authority and Environment Agency to ensure that the project was successfully closed out to the satisfaction of all parties.

Remediation involved removal of several Underground Storage Tanks (UST’s) and source removal of hotspots.  Additionally, groudwater treatment was designed, installed and operated.

Following remediation, a groundwater monitoring period was undertaken which confirmed that all contaminants had been remediated to acceptable levels.

GPR Surveying, Cavalry Barracks, Hounslow

YourEnvironment were commissioned to undertake a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey at Cavalry Barracks, Hounslow which is being extensively refurbished.  The purpose of the GPR was to identify the runs of underlying services for future excavation as it was believed that the cables were possibly damaged.

YourEnvironment were able to offer a fixed price for the works, the services were marked on the ground with site data transferred on to a measured drawing for future reference and supplied to our client.

YourEnvironment were asked to provide Geotechnical testing to a backfilled void.

The works included negotiation with the client and land purchasers’ Environmental Consultant to agree a suitable backfill specification both chemically and geotechnically.

The validation works involved taking regular samples of the backfilled material for laboratory analysis and also providing in-situ Geotechnical testing in the form of Plate Tests with calculated CBR’s.

Geotechnical Testing in former Gasholder, Devon

Works were carried out in private gardens as well as communal areas and therefore careful liaison and negotiation was undertaken with the residents and stakeholders prior to commencement of works.  The intrusive investigation was planned to achieve minimal disturbance to the residents.

A significant number of trial pits were undertaken in locations of existing and proposed soft landscaping to provide samples for contamination testing.   The results of the chemical testing indicated elevated concentrations of lead and benzo(a)pyrene, with asbestos also present.

Through pragmatic assessment of the findings in context of the proposed redevelopment scheme, it was deemed likely that the contamination identified was of minimal risk to the residents and that further risk assessment was unnecessary.  A remedial strategy for the site was therefore recommended allowing the client to proceed with the groundworks stage.
