The Water Cycle Model

Below are details on how to create your own mini-water cycle. This will demonstrate some of the basic principles of the water cycle.

MATERIALS:

  • Muddy Water (not too muddy, just dark and murky will do!)
  • A Large washing up bowl
  • cling film (or similar)
  • sticky tape
  • a light weight (some plastcine/blu-tac/small stone)
  • sunny weather (helps...)
  1. First, get some muddy water and pour it into the large washing up bowl. There is no need to fill the washing up bowl higher than about 10cm/4inches.
  2. Cover the bowl with cling film and seal the edges with sticky tape.
  3. Put the light weight into the middle of the cling film so that it makes a slight hollow (so it can't be too heavy otherwise it will break the cling film - durgh!).
  4. Stand the bowl out in the sun.
  5. Come back every couple of hours and see the results! I won't tell you what happens because that would spoil the surprise! :)

Have a think about the implications of the water cycle when mixed in with air and water pollution!
