Global Warming a load of hot air? Methane is an example of a greenhouse gas. This means that it traps some of the Earth's radiation that would otherwise escape into outer space. The result of this is to make the Earth warmer, which has become known as the Greenhouse Effect. We know that other gases contribute to the Greenhouse Effect and gases produced by human activities result in what is commonly referred to as global warming. There is an increasing amount of scientific evidence that really does suggest that the Earth is getting warmer. More importantly, the research points to gases released as a result of human actions as being the most significant contributor to global warming. Global warming = long, hot summers? Making long-term predictions from the data that exists is really tricky and certainly not an exact science! However, what is certain is that we will not experience really long and hot summers in the UK. Estimates suggest that if the amount of atmospheric carbon dioxide gas doubles by 2030, then an average temperature increase of 2 degrees C may result - hardly Saharan is it? Well no, but the effect on the environment could be significant since sea levels will rise due to melting Polar ice caps, causing low-lying areas of land to be flooded. |
